ADSL stands for asymmetric digital subscriber line. It is a type of DSL broadband internet connection technology. Slow Modem Cause #1
Unlike the old dial up modems, DSL modems use a different frequency range to the human voice that is transmitted at 4KHZ and below. This 4KHZ band is also known as the base band. DSL modems use the broad band frequencies which are in the 4KHZ to 4MHZ range allowing them to provide higher bandwidth and to work simultaneously with normal telephone voice calls. Interference between these frequencies can cause modem performance problems. A DSL filter(s) can be installed in order to prevent interference between the home telephone(s) and the DSL service.
Slow Modem Cause #2
Another common problem experienced by DSL broadband users is one of attenuation. Attenuation is a term used to describe the reduction in signal strength, as distance increases so does attenuation. The level of attenuation determines the speed that you will ultimately receive from the DSL service.
It is true, however, that attenuation should be reasonably constant given that the distance between your home and the service provider’s exchange doesn’t change. But some users experience different levels of performance during different time periods throughout the day. So what causes varying degrees slow modem problems?

Toronto, Canada - GAO Research Inc. has announced a new release of its V.34 fax modem software, which provides adaptive signalling through line probing by adjusting to channel quality and capacity. It is the standard for fax modems of up to 33,600bps.
This high performance V.34 fax modem software operates over twisted pair, point-to-point circuits and on dial-up or leased circuits. One of the most significant characters of the software is its use of increased bit rates to utilize maximum bandwidth permitted by the channel. Unlike lower speed modem standards where nominal bandwidth was set using a fixed carrier frequency, both the bandwidth and carrier frequencies are adaptive in V.34. The V.34 fax modem supports data signalling rates from 2.4kbps to 33.6kbps. It incorporates a higher level of optional capabilities, intelligence, and adaptability than the lower speed V.series modems to make the best use of available conditions. Trellis coding and shell mapping provide this modem with a robust design for heavily impaired channels.

If you are having trouble with your cable provided Internet circuit, your first step is to determine whether the problem is in the Internet Service Provider’s (ISP) network or specific to your location. The best tool for determining the location of Internet trouble is an IP Packet Loss and Delay Test Tool. I’ve included some information on how to find and use one of these tools at the end of this article.
Let’s assume that you have used an IP Packet Loss Tool and found either significant latency or packet loss happening at your site. In other words, the problem is specific to your location. What should you do next? Check the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR or S/N) on the cable modem.

According to Wikipedia.org, “signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is a measure used in science and engineering to quantify how much a signal has been corrupted by noise. It is defined as the ratio of signal power to the noise power corrupting the signal. A ratio higher than 1:1 indicates more signal than noise.”
